how to create an ad from a product photo

While we are on the subject of photos, I wanted to show how to create an ad from a product photo. This is something that comes up quite a bit. Most people understand the basics of cropping and editing their photos, but not how to resize them.
Let’s say you want to create a 125 x 125 pixel ad. The first thing you need to do is to crop your image so that it is perfectly square. I am working with Photoshop Elements, which is a lite version and your photo editing software may be different. The easiest way to do this is to make sure the info window is on (has a little check mark beside it).
Click on any of the images to see a full-size version.
When you use the marquee tool to select the area to be cropped, you will see the numbers in the info window change (see the circled area in the image below). You want those numbers to be the same for both width(W) and height(H). Click image –> crop and you will have a square image.
Now you can add text to your ad if you wish.
Now, we need to resize the ad to 125 x 125 pixels. Click on Image –> Resize –> Image Size.
A small window will pop up. Where it says Document Size, change the Resolution to 72 pixels per inch. Then change the width to 1.74 inches and your height should automatically change. The numbers in the top boxes under Pixel Dimensions should now show 125. Click the OK button.
Voila! You now have a 125 x 125 pixel ad.

Thanks for this post, Chris!
I learned something new tonight. I didn’t know about the info window and just opened Elements so I could click on that.
Great post!
